“Every child is a different kind of flower and all together make this world a beautiful garden.” Breaking Down Barriers: Supporting Children with Cerebral Palsy and Their Families In India, social stigma surrounding disability can be overwhelming, leaving families feeling isolated and unsupported. Mothers of children with cerebral palsy often face neglect and disrespect from their communities, making an already challenging situation even more difficult. However, with early diagnosis and intervention, children with cerebral palsy can learn to overcome the challenges associated with their condition. Our Early Intervention Centres (EICs) offer rehabilitation sessions that bring together children, their mothers, and professional physiotherapists. Through these sessions, our physiotherapists empower mothers with the skills and confidence to support their child’s unique needs. Meanwhile, our team works with the children to stimulate their development, educate them on self-care, and foster their growth into independent, dignified adults. We operate three Early Intervention Centres in the Tiruvannamalai area: Located in Tiruvannamalai city, Thandarampet, and Chengam, our EICs provide critical support to families navigating the complexities of cerebral palsy. By breaking down social barriers and providing comprehensive care, we help children with cerebral palsy unlock their full potential. In reality, there is no cure for cerebral palsy, but an early diagnosis gives to the child the opportunity to find ways to overcome the challenges due to the condition. In the early morning hours, children and their mothers gather in a serene circle, ready to embark on a special yoga session. This intimate setting is filled with a profound sense of community and compassion. As they sit together, each mother tenderly guides her child through a series of carefully adapted yoga movements. For many of these children, even the simplest actions can be a challenge, filled with discomfort and frustration. Yet, in this sacred space, they find the courage to move, to stretch, and to breathe. The mothers’ presence is a balm to their children’s souls, offering a sense of security and reassurance. Together, they navigate the complexities of cerebral palsy, transforming what might seem like limitations into opportunities for growth and exploration. In this circle of love and support, the boundaries of physical ability are gently stretched, and the beauty of the human spirit is revealed. As they practice, laugh, and sometimes cry together, these families remind us that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope, always resilience, and always the transformative power of love.” Srivarshini is a child with Autism. After some years at our centre, now she can stand and walk without support, she can speak some words, recognise toilet needs and communicate with other children. The love of her grandmother, together with the support of the centre, have really made the difference for this little hero.
