Paul Institute of Special Teacher Training

The Paul Institute of Special Teacher Training was started in August 2012 in Athiyandal Village, Tiruvannamalai, to address the core issues of the rehabilitation of children with mental retardation, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities. Paul Institute is licensed by the“REHABILIATION COUNCIL OF INDIA”, New Delhi, to provide a two year Diploma course in Special Teacher training.

Currently, India is in need of approximately, more than 120,000 rehabilitation professionals to work for children with disabilities. In Tamil Nadu, it is estimated that there are approximately 100,000 children with mental retardation, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities. Tamil Nadu needs more than 10,000 professionals to reach all these children.

There are only six Special Teacher Training Institutes in Tamil Nadu, licensed to provide courses in mental retardation, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities. These institutes are located in the big cities and consequently the graduates (special education teachers) prefer to stay and work in the cities. Paul institute is now the 7th licensed institute in Tamil Nadu.

The vision of the Paul institute of Special Teacher Training is three fold:

  1. To bring special education teachers to the rural areas
  2. To offer higher education to students who complete 12th standard and who are unable to go for higher education.
  3. To motivate rural students to work for the rehabilitation of children with disabilities within their own communities.

Paul institute offers two Diploma Courses:

  1. Diploma in Special Education in Mental Retardation
  2. Diploma in Special Education in Cerebral Palsy

Each course has the capacity to accommodate 25 students to train in each year. Students are trained by highly professional teachers and lecturers. Students are given practical trainings in our Lifeline Special Schools, Childline Special Schools and our Early Intervention Centers.

Students can apply during the months of May through June and will be screened by the “Rehabilitation Council of India” for selection. Applications can be downloaded via this link “PTI Application”. Students who need accommodation are provided with hostel facilities
